“Why were the sirens on?”

“The Orderian have arrived, it’s to notify Lightwatchers that the seal is being opened, so they should be
wary for any uninvited guest, hence the quietness.”

“You mean demons and Tempters.”

“Among other things, enough questions, go shower and change, I’ll meet you out front.”

She nodded, he was almost out the door, when he gave a backward glance, “Oh and wear the Armor
on your bed, Nadia sent them for you.”

“She seems nice enough, I don’t know why you have issues with her. If you ask me, I would think she
might even have a thing for you.”

He gave her a crooked look, “Good thing I didn't. The ones who show you kindness so quickly are the
people you should be most afraid of Clare, this is no fairytale, you trust the wrong person, you dead.”

The words stuck in the air like a constant scent even after he exited the room saying no more.

She glared at the mess she made, “You trust the wrong person, you dead.”

Those words were so true, but who did her mother trust. Shaking her head she laughed at the
absurdity that her mother had kept this all from her. She never would’ve guessed that all this was real,
even with the signs smack in her face, even living in the proof, she still had doubts.

Grabbing the brown Armor from her bed she walked out into the passage, down the lobby, and into
Nathans bedroom where she showered and changed.

It was a good hour later when Nathan finally appeared at the entrance of the castle. He, like her, wore
brown Armor, which consisted of leather pants and a t-shirt that looked cotton but was much stronger,
and lace-up black boots that felt much lighter than they looked. She’d tied her hair in a high ponytail so
that it was out of her face.

“You all ready sister, come on, Kalbreal's waiting outside.”

Clare followed him out the castle doors, and spotted Kalbreal instantly, wearing grey leathers and a
white shirt loosely buttoned.

She liked the grey better than the brown. She was about to say something but stopped when she saw
the frown marred on his face. He didn’t seem to be that thrilled to see her, but he was as confusing to
read as Latin words in her mind, so she didn’t let it bother her.

She spun around, “Is it just the three of us, I thought Nadia and Alonso are like your pals.”

Kalbreal laughed, a streak of ginger hair dangled in his eye, the tip rested below his cheekbone
complimenting his eyes. Hair so straight and silky always moving as he walked, “Your brother knows
Nadia because they grew up together, I won’t really call them PALS.”

Nathan squinted in Kalbreal’s direction as he commented, “She thinks she’s the hottest thing since
Megan fox.”

A man approached them, just as they’d taken a small pathway between two large castles.

Clare had been quiet for the past ten minutes, admiring the view, trying to live in the now and not the
past.

The stranger didn’t walk all the way to them, but Nathan left her and Kalbreal to go talk with the man.
She waited in silence, her lips pursed...

Nathan rubbed his hand on his face, as his steps closed into her and Kalbreal, “I’ve been requested by
Annabelle, I’ll catch up later.”

Clare’s heart sank, was he seriously going to leave her with Kalbreal, as if he read her thought, Nathan
sighed, “You’ll be fine, Kalbreal will show you around.”

She pouted, “Can’t I just come with you.”

Kalbreal moved into view just next to Nathan, “Come on.”

She gave her brother one last snicker before he turned his back to leave. Her nerves rose at the
thought of getting left alone with Kalbreal. He was undeniably alluring, there was no doubt, but he had
a way of looking at her and tempting her, she knew it was an Angel thing, though she didn’t have proof,
still, “Don’t do any freaky stuff just..” she hesitated, dangling her hands carelessly in the air, “Let’s keep
the distance.”

He grinned, and shook his head, “Fine, if that’s what you wish.”

They walked further down the pathway between two castles. Nathan left in the opposite direction, “So
you admit that you’ve been messing with me.”

“Maybe just a little, I can’t help it, I don’t socialize with deceptors very often, and you, mark-less, are so
much like them, ambrosia is very seductive to deceptors, and I happen to be made of it.”

Well, that explained a lot, “Can’t you tempt the other Lightwatchers?”

“Not worth it, they’re partial Angels, too much effort. But I only did it to you once, I tried it in the
bathroom but you rejected it.”

“Not so lucky there, are you.” She rolled her eyes, “You don’t need ambrosia to get a woman Kalbreal.”

“Since my wife, Azilina.” The name was spoken with so much passion coming from Kalbreal’s lips, “I’ve
not been enticed by another, until recently.”

Clare’s breath caught but she said nothing, as her eyes stayed firmly on the ground, ashamed that she
didn’t share this Angels’ sudden emotion. She lusted for a faceless Caster with breathtaking blue eyes,
that spoke of water, ice and crushed diamonds, rather than an Angel whose body was made for
obsession.

They walked to the end of the path and started up a small hill, with trees and smaller castles than the
front end of Khiron, which would have still been considered massively large in the deceptors world.

Clare felt her heart somber on the quiet walk. Her thoughts on Kalbreal as he walked beside her just as
lost in his own mind as she was in hers.

She thought about the part of him that had loved before, a part of him devoted to one eternally. The
knowledge made her see that while she had never thought of getting married, he had lived it. She was
barely grown, and he was beyond it, but still, if a guy could speak her name with so much passion as
he had spoken of his wife,… She didn’t let the thought finish before she turned her head to face
him.
