David Broke Down In Tears

After chatting with Gwendolyn, Cedrick went to the interrogation room.

Neville had been waiting at the door for a while.

The door to the interrogation room opened, revealing a spacious room with a table in the middle.

David sat there obediently, not even pulling on a cigarette.

Seeing Cedrick enter, David immediately tried to stand up but was held down by two police officers of
both sides and made to sit back down. “Cedrick, I was on a business trip. Why did you suddenly call
me back?”

Cedrick fixated his dark, piercing gaze on David in silence.

A series of dull thuds sounded as he strode in wearing his military boots.

He walked to a table several meters opposite David and sat down. Only then did he start to speak.
“Uncle David, if you were on a business trip, why were you living so pathetically, staying in an ordinary
motel and eating cheap food? You were obviously avoiding me.”

His deep and composed voice didn’t reveal a hint of his emotions, but his overwhelming presence was
oppressive.

David’s countenance stiffened slightly before he swiftly forced an amicable smile. “What are you talking
about? Why would I hide from you? I was on a business trip to Livingsfill and unexpectedly lost my ID
and wallet, so I borrowed some money from an old friend and had to economize.”

Cedrick wasn’t interested in listening to him beat around the bush, so he glanced at Neville.

Neville fathomed his boss’ intention and bowed respectfully. Before leaving, he instructed the police
officers to secure David’s hands to the handcuffs on the interrogation table. Then, he led the other
officers out of the room.

After the heavy door of the spacious interrogation room was closed, only Cedrick and David were left
alone inside.

Cedrick got up and moved to the table in front of David. He narrowed his pensive gaze, laced with
covert fury, while scrutinizing his uncle.

David was taken aback by Gedrick’s threatening aura.

Having known the latter for so long and because they had never been at odds, Cedrick had always
been friendly to David and his family, never making things difficult or treating them harshly. At times, he
would even secretly offer them assistance.

Also, ever since Cedrick took over the Jenson family, David’s family had been living more comfortably
than when Valentino was in charge.

“Cedrick, you—”

Before David could ask, Cedrick cut to the chase. “Uncle David, I’ve figured out pretty much the whole
truth about my parents’ car accident. Are you still going to keep me in the dark?”

David widened his eyes and slumped weakly like a deflated balloon. “You already know…

He sighed in resignation. “Since you deliberately sent someone to capture me at Livingsfill, I suppose
Yael has pushed all the blame on me.”

Cedrick pressed further. “On the day of the accident, were you the one sitting in the driver’s seat?”

David nodded. “Yes,”

Then, he pondered briefly, shook his head, and began defending himself, “That day, Yael and I
attended a social gathering, and we both drank a lot. I wanted to call a driver, but he insisted on driving
himself, so 1 agreed. I clearly remember him sitting in the driver’s seat.”

Cedrick said expressionlessly. “Go on.”

“On our way home that day, Yael mentioned how Dad favored Zack and wasn’t willing to hand over the
position of successor to him. Yael wanted to win me over to help him, but I refused. We argued, and I
chose to ignore him. I remember I was sitting in the backseat while he drove. I fell asleep in the back,
but when I woke up, Logan, Dad, and many police officers were staring at me. I did indeed drink a
considerable amount of alcohol that day, so much so that I was in a daze. After being forced to sober
up, 1 was taken by my dad to the ancestral hall and severely beaten. Yael insisted that I was driving,
and we argued about it. However, due to how drunk I was, I kept thinking that I must have blacked out
and everything that happened earlier was just my imagination.“

David’s eyes shone with sincerity. “Cedrick, please believe me. I thought about this matter many times
afterward, and I’m sure it wasn’t my imagination. Yael framed me on purpose. I harbored no ill intention
toward Zack.”

Poker-faced, Cedrick listened to his account without interrupting. “Since you didn’t do anything wrong,
why were you so guilty that you escaped to Livingsfill to hide? And why didn’t you explain the situation
to Grandpa? Even if you didn’t say anything then, after thinking through the incident afterward, you
should’ve told the truth.”

Cedrick gazed at his uncle, obviously suppressing his anger. “You not only failed to tell the truth but
also helped conceal it for many years. How can you expect me to believe that you have nothing to do
with this

matter?”

Facing Cedrick’s relentless questioning. David sighed incessantly in remorse. “I’m sorry. At the time,
Dad helped to contain the situation and reminded Yael and me not to mention it again. Zack was Dad’s
favorite son. Dad was brokenhearted for a long while because of his death, so I felt it wasn’t
appropriate to bring up the truth then. This matter was left hanging, and later… I admit I had selfish
motives.”

Hearing that last sentence, Cedrick snorted. “You’re finally being honest, Uncle David.”

A suffocating atmosphere filled the air inside the interrogation room.

David broke out in a cold sweat. Unable to hold in his emotions, he looked up at his nephew and
continued to explain, “When I saw Dad was raising you personally, I thought it was a blessing for you.
After all, Yael was the most powerful among my generation in the Jenson family at that time. If I
divulged the truth, and members of the family forced Dad to name you as his successor to compensate
for your parents’ misfortune, it would be detrimental to you. You were only two or three years old then,
utterly incapable of contending with Yael. Doing that would only make you Yael’s target. Although your
parents’ accident wasn’t my doing. I was at the scene. Yael insisted on driving, and I didn’t adamantly
persuade him not to, which resulted in such a horrific car accident. I’m at fault, and I feel guilty toward
you. Thus, I’ve never considered competing with you all these years. Even when Yael made things
difficult for you, denouncing you at the ancestral hall, I spoke up for you. Cedrick, I sincerely care for
you. Can you please

spare me? Triss is my only daughter. Her mother passed away early from a miscarriage, so I’ve been
fulfilling both roles as Triss father and mother throughout the years. I didn’t dare to remarry because I
feared it would affect her mental health. I-I really can’t bear to leave her side before seeing her get
married.”

Toward the end of his speech, David’s eyes reddened, and his voice choked with emotions. He
genuinely treasured his only daughter dearly.

The reason why he hid in Livingsfill was that he was afraid that Cedrick would discover the truth about
the past and that Yael would pin everything on him again.

David knew he wasn’t competent nor had the ability to gather evidence.

He just wanted to live the rest of his life in peace, content with enjoying his retirement life and his
daughter’s company.

He didn’t want to get involved in that mess and lacked the confidence to convince Cedrick to believe
everything he said.

At the thought of his unmarried daughter, David burst into tears, lowering his head and sobbing quietly.
“Cedrick, your parents were met with the car accident and passed away tragically due to the Jenson
family’s internal strife. Many people were implicated, so it’s only right if you intend to seek revenge on
all of them. I’m in no position to dissuade you, but could you give me some more time to get Triss
settled in!

Feeling frustrated, Cedrick merely stared coldly at his uncle.

David couldn’t fathom what Cedrick was thinking from the latter’s empty gaze.

Nonetheless, he could clearly sense Cedrick’s intensifying chilly aura.

David faltered. “I know this is just my one-sided account, and it’s only normal for you to be
unconvinced. I-

Before he could finish his sentence, Cedrick, seemingly tired of listening to David’s complaints, turned
and walked away without looking back.

“Cedrick?”

The broad and imposing figure of Cedrick in military uniform invoked respect within David, causing the
latter to instinctively soften his tone when he spoke.

Still, Cedrick ignored him, striding out of the interrogation room. His silence left David baffled.

Cedrick’s deep and low voice finally sounded after he stepped through the door.

Due to the pin-drop silence inside the interrogation room, David heard Cedrick’s words loud and clear.
“Send him back to the Jenson residence. Assign two officers to monitor him and forbid him from leaving
freely. Update me with his whereabouts immediately if he steps out of the house.”

“Understood, Mr. Jenson.”

David widened his wrinkly eyes, and tears welled up in them.

As advanced in age as he was, he still broke down in tears at that moment. Does Cedrick believe me?
Is he willing to let me go!

Inexplicable feelings churned within him. A mixture of relief and excitement filled his chest, but the guilt
that had haunted him for years also amplified.
